The National Snow and Ice Data Center/World Data Center for Glaciology, Boulder (NSIDC/WDC) archives both air and ground glacier photographs, and more than 4,500 of these prints are now available online via the Glacier Photograph Collection. Most of these glaciers are located in the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Greenland, with a limited number of photos from Europe and South America. Some photographs were taken in the 1800's. NSIDC is partnering with the NOAA Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP) and the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) to publish this collection.

Unemployment Rate of U.S. Scientists and Engineers Drops to Record Low 2.5% in 2006: April 2008 Report from National Science Foundation.

From the report: "The overall unemployment rate of scientists and engineers in the United States dropped from 3.2% in 2003 to 2.5% in 2006, according to data from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System (SESTAT). This is the lowest unemployment rate measured by SESTAT since the early 1990s. It continues a trend of lower unemployment rates for scientists and engineers compared with unemployment rates in the rest of the U.S. economy. Comparable unemployment rates for the entire U.S. labor force in 2003 and 2006 were 6.0% and 4.7%, respectively."

Report Highlights

• Overall unemployment rate of scientists and engineers in the United States dropped from 3.2% in 2003 to 2.5% in 2006
• Total number of scientists and engineers in the U.S. grew by almost 1 million between 2003 and 2006 (Table 1)
• Rates dropped for most S&E occupations and for individuals at all degree levels and varied by occupation (Table 2)
• Unemployment rates dropped for all degree levels (Table 3)
• Scientists and engineers in the U.S. totaled 22.6 million in 2006 (Table 4), almost half of them women (45%)
• Most scientists and engineers were married or lived in a marriage-like relationship (Table 4)
• The vast majority of scientists and engineers in the United States were U.S. citizens (Table 4)
• The business/industry sector employed the largest share of scientists and engineers (69.4%), followed by educational institutions (18.8%) and government (11.8%) (Table 5)

High Temperatures-High Pressures (www.hthpweb.com) is "devoted to the experimental and theoretical study of the thermophysical properties of matter." It began in 1998 and ceased publication in 2005. Recently it was been picked up by another publisher and they have released the last 2 issues from the 2005 volume.

National Academies Press (NAP) was created to publish reports issued by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council, all operating under a charter granted by the Congress of the United States. NAP publishes more than 200 books per year on topics in science, engineering, and health.

Over 3000 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Standards / Recommendations are now free online. ITU is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies.

A strong focus of current standards work is providing the foundations for the so-called next-generation network (NGN). Other key areas include IPTV, ICT in vehicles, cybersecurity, quality of service, multimedia, emergency communications and standards for access, such as VDSL 2 - very high speed digital subscriber line 2, the newest and most advanced standard of DSL broadband wireline communications.

Recommendations are standards that define how telecommunication networks operate and interwork. ITU-T Recommendations are non-binding, however they are generally complied with due to their high quality and because they guarantee the interconnectivity of networks and enable telecommunication services to be provided on a worldwide scale. • The U.S. Geological Service (USGS) recently launched two sites:

  1. TerraLook allows users to create their own collections of georeferenced JPEG satellite images created from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Tri-Decadal Global Landsat Orthorectified. TerraLook serves GIS, natural resource management, education, and other communities, and provide easily accessible remotely-sensed data. TerraLook images are designed for visual interpretation and display, and are of value to anyone who wants to see the changes to the Earth's surface over the last 30 years.

  2. Map Locator and Downloader, a Web tool designed to deliver topographic maps easier, faster and less expensively than before. Using open source software and the Google Maps programming interface, it allows users to find the topographic maps they need, by searching zip code, address, or navigating on an interactive map

• TEMIS (Tropospheric Emission MonitoringInternet Service) measures and maps concentrations and transboundary movements of emissions through their Air pollution monitoring site. It contains data for tropospheric ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), among other pollutants. Most data goes back as far as 2002. Access near-real time satellite images and download data into Google Earth, which will project the images onto the globe in a series of short films.

• Natural Earth - New Layer for NASA's World Wind. Natural Earth is a world physical map at 1.24 km resolution. Made primarily from data and imagery collected by NASA satellites and graphically enhanced by the NPS, Natural Earth is a base for general mapmaking. The combination of shaded relief and landcover colors brings the physical world to life.

The NTIS database (ntis.gov/search) contains over 3 million items including audiovisual materials, data, and software.

Over 1,000 items are added weekly. The database was recently extended back to 1964. In addition, the search has been enhanced to refine by categories, collections, and source agencies.

JCR is a comprehensive resource that allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals. Citation and article counts are indicators of researcher usage of specific journals. By tabulating and aggregating citation and article counts, JCR offers a unique perspective for journal evaluation and comparison.

"Antarctica is the highest of all continents with an average elevation over triple that of North America. Antarctica is also a desert; and although it is the driest of continents, Antarctica's great polar ice cap smothers nearly the entire landscape locking 70 percent of the world's freshwater in ice and snow. . . . Our photographs, many of which we composed together using one camera on one tripod, reflect our shared emotional response to what could easily be construed as overwhelming stimulus."

The exhibit is on display in the University of Colorado at Boulder's HotSpot Gallery, located on the first floor of Norlin Library (campus map). The exhibit is free to the public and open during normal library hours from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and noon to midnight on Sundays.
