Visualize NSIDC Data with Google Earth

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) now supplies images and data through Google Earth. "Our goal is to help the general public better understand the cryosphere-where the world is frozen-by making our data more visible and interactive."

Instructions and Help:

Data sets available (as of March 1, 2006):

  1. Online Glacier Photograph Database: Approximately 3,000 glacier images organized by glacier name
    • Long-Term Change Photograph Pairs (from Bruce Molnia of the U.S. Geological Survey): A subset of the Online Glacier Photograph Database, illustrating how some glaciers have changed over long time periods
  2. Circum-Arctic Map of Permafrost and Ground-Ice Conditions: Permafrost, or permanently frozen ground, is ground (soil, sediment, or rock) that remains at or below 00C for at least two years. This data set depicts the distribution and properties of permafrost and ground ice in the Northern Hemisphere
